In my previous blog post I talked about the condition of low
testosterone (low T) that affects men of many different ages. One of the
symptoms of low T is erectile dysfunction (ED). However, ED is much more than
just a symptom low testosterone levels, it is a surprisingly pervasive and
complex medical issue that affects more than 33 million men in the United
States alone!
There are many underlying causes that may contribute to the
development of ED, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high
cholesterol, neurologic conditions, prostate problems, etc. Everyday we are
bombarded by different ads promising a quick and easy solution to ED. As a
result, the ubiquitous blue pill has become a household name and an
ever-present element of pop-culture.
Dr. Christopher Asandra, M.D., Founder and Chief Medical
Officer of NuMale Medical Center,
provides shocking statistics in his article “The
Rate Of Erectile Dysfunction.” He points out that “one in five men over the
age of 20 and more than half of men over 65” are suffering from ED nationwide.
However, instead of running tests and trying to identify the underlying causes
of the problem, doctors are often too quick to prescribe oral ED medication
which only serves as a temporary solution and can have many dangerous side
effects.
ED is a very painful topic for most men that is not often discussed
at dinner parties. Our type A cultural stereotypes make it extremely difficult
for many men to admit having ED and seek professional medical help. It is much
easier to swallow a “magic pill” and forget about the problem, even if only for
a couple of hours. However, if we want to make real progress and live healthier
and more fulfilling lives, we ought to have an open discussion about these
issues and seek to remove the taboo surrounding ED once and for all.
